“A ship graveyard they called it once” whispers the old oak. Welcome to Holmens Cemetery Copenhagen’s oldest continuously used cemetery.

Holmens Cemetery wasn’t always here. It began life beside the Holmen naval church. Indigent sailors and their families found their final rest there. Think of it a poignant resting place for those who served the crown at sea. In 1666 it moved to its current location on Dag Hammarskjolds Alle. It was a practical move. The city was growing. More burial space was needed.

Originally Holmens Cemetery was simple. No grand monuments were permitted. This changed later. A moat was dug. A hawthorn hedge was planted. This kept grazing cattle out. It also meant the wealthy could finally afford to bury their loved ones here.

The current layout dates back to 1798. Sør F C Schmidt designed it. It’s a peaceful spot. Today people stroll amongst the trees. They relax on benches. Families enjoy picnics. It’s a place of beauty and quiet reflection.

A striking chapel stands in the heart of Holmens Cemetery. It was built in 1902. Architect Ludvig Fenger designed it. He was inspired by traditional Nordic stave churches. The shingled roof and carved animal heads are beautiful details. Though some have criticized the design for its distinctly Norwegian look.

Don’t miss the memorial to the sailors lost in the Battle of Copenhagen in 1802. It’s a tumulus topped by an obelisk. Johannes Wiedewelt designed it. It’s a powerful tribute to those who died in service. It stands as a silent testament to the bravery and sacrifice of these brave sailors.

Holmens Cemetery is more than just a graveyard. It’s a living history book. It tells the stories of sailors and their families for centuries. It speaks of the changing city of Copenhagen and its relationship with the sea. It is a place of quiet contemplation beauty and remembrance. Take your time. Explore its history. Let its atmosphere wash over you.
