Did you know that this tiny village called Hollywood, Co Wicklow, is the original Hollywood? It’s true. The village pre-dates its famous American cousin by centuries. The story goes that a blacksmith named Matthew Guirke emigrated from here to the US in 1850. He supposedly founded a homestead in California and named it after his native place. We are standing just a few hundred yards from Corrigan’s Glen, where the famous scene in the film ‘Michael Collins’ took place where Collins was murdered. Liam Neeson, who played Collins was a familiar figure in this charming village. This village was also the location for iconic film scenes from other films, like ‘Dancing at Lughnasa’, where Meryl Streep starred, ‘Braveheart’, ‘King Arthur’, and ‘The Wind That Shakes the Barley’. It seems that when a charming Irish village is required, Hollywood, County Wicklow fits the bill perfectly. So next time someone mentions Hollywood – remember this little village that gave its name to the glamorous home of the movie industry. Who knows, maybe you’ll even bump into a Hollywood star, the next time you visit!
