How about we step into a place where nature meets recreation, right here at Hollydale Regional Park? This park covers 56 acres. Hollydale Regional Park has become a cherished space for locals and visitors alike.
Hollydale Regional Park is located in South Gate. It is part of Los Angeles County. Amigos de los Rios has greatly enhanced Hollydale Regional Park. They transformed the landscape into a native plant paradise. This celebrates the flora and fauna of our watershed. It also enhances recreational opportunities for families.
In 2013 phase one of this project was completed. Funding was provided by the Coca-Cola Foundation Metropolitan Grants Program. Phase Two received funding from the California State Coastal Conservancy. It aligned with the Hollydale Regional Park Master Plan. Large areas of grass were removed for more native habitat. Additional stormwater infrastructure was constructed. More trees were planted throughout Hollydale Regional Park.
Bioswales were added to improve drainage. Decomposed granite surfacing was installed. Native plant landscaping was added. Interpretive signage was added as well.
Hollydale Regional Park offers many amenities. There are tennis courts for enthusiasts. Baseball and soccer fields invite team sports. A playground delights children. Picnic areas offer relaxation. Groups of over 50 can reserve picnic areas. An Equestrian Center is available for rent too. Remember that the park closes at sunset.
South Gate provides nine city parks for its citizens. South Gate Park is the largest. It covers 96.8 acres. Hollydale Community Park covers 2.2 acres. It has a playground, basketball courts and a Community Center.
Like South Gate, the Hollydale area started as a planned community. A development company laid streets and sidewalks. They constructed a few homes in the early 1920s. Factories sprang up near the railroad tracks. A few shops and a post office soon appeared. The Great Depression ended development for nearly a decade.
Under the Works Progress Administration, empty land was covered with corn and tomato plants. New neighbors joined the Hollydale community when World War II hit. Factories manufactured materials for the war effort. Hollydale even had an anti-aircraft gun near the railroad tracks.
Today, Hollydale Regional Park continues to evolve. It is a vibrant hub for community activities. As you explore, consider the park’s transformation. Appreciate the blend of recreation and nature.
