Did the founders of Hollis Hills Jewish Center envision its lasting impact? Today, we stand before this testament to community and faith. The Hollis Hills Jewish Center’s history is a fascinating blend of growth, consolidation, and resilience. Originally constructed in stages starting in 1949, the Center’s evolution is mirrored in its architecture. The original sanctuary, housed in the basement, eventually gave way to a new one built above. Finally, the current westward-facing sanctuary was dedicated in 1960. The Hollis Hills Jewish Center initially boasted a membership of 500 families. This thriving community continued to grow, eventually consolidating with the Bayside Jewish Center, Jewish Center of Oak Hills, and Marathon Jewish Community Center to form Congregation Etz Hayim at Hollis Hills Bayside. This union brought together diverse stories. Among them were the poignant experiences of numerous Holocaust survivors. One member even had a connection to Schindler’s List. The Hollis Hills Jewish Center’s story also includes dedicated individuals like Reverend Frank E. Strassfeld. He served the Center for an impressive 49 years. His commitment is honored with the main sanctuary bearing his name and a section of Union Turnpike designated as Reverend Frank Strassfeld Turnpike. As recently as 2023, the Center received funding from the Department of Homeland Security. This was to enhance its security measures. The Hollis Hills Jewish Center stands not just as a building, but as a living testament to the enduring power of faith and community. It has served as a beacon for generations. It continues to offer a place for connection, learning, and spiritual growth.
