Picture the scene A sturdy brick structure stands before you. This is the Holländische Mühle in Zehlendorf a unique landmark in Berlin.

This isn’t just any windmill. The Holländische Mühle boasts a fascinating history. Built in 1879 it was rebuilt just two years later in a rare round shape. This wasn’t a simple construction project. The original wooden structure was replaced by a brick one. This change reflects the evolving building techniques of the time. The windmill’s location highlights Berlin’s blend of rural and urban.

The wind wasn’t always reliable. In 1898 a petroleum motor was added. This was then upgraded to a gas motor in 1918 and finally an electric motor in 1921. These changes show how technology impacted even the most traditional of crafts. Despite the technological advancements the sails remained. They weren’t functional anymore though. They stayed for aesthetic reasons. They were finally removed during World War II. This was done to prevent the windmill from being a navigation point for enemy aircraft.

After the war grain continued to be milled at the Holländische Mühle. Later the windmill’s purpose shifted towards processing plastic granules. For decades after this the Holländische Mühle was abandoned. It fell into disrepair. Then in 1997 an investor stepped in. This person worked with preservationists to restore the windmill. They converted it into a private residence. The original brick facade and the wooden windows were preserved. The old mill head was carefully dismantled. It was carefully measured and then perfectly reconstructed at a specialized workshop in the Black Forest. A display case outside tells the full story of this remarkable building.

The Holländische Mühle stands as a testament to Berlin’s history. It showcases the changes in technology and the city’s resilient spirit. It’s a fascinating piece of the city’s rich past. It’s well worth a visit. Imagine life inside that converted windmill. What stories could those walls tell?
