Was is a life worth if you can’t express yourself? Here at the Holger Biege Plaque, we remember a man who wrestled with this very question. The Holger Biege Plaque, affixed to Goethestraße 7, commemorates the early life of singer-songwriter Holger Biege. Born in Greifswald in 1952, Biege called this house home for his first few years. He later became known for his poignant lyrics and the unique blend of pop and classical music in his songs. His music resonated deeply with many in East Germany. Songs like “Sagte mal ein Dichter,” “Reichtum der Welt,” and “Wenn der Abend kommt” became interwoven with the lives of a generation. Yet, Biege remained largely unknown in West Germany, even after relocating there in 1983. Biege straddled a difficult line in East Germany. His thought-provoking lyrics, exploring themes of life’s meaning, the fragility of the earth, and the complexities of relationships, were delivered with an unusual seriousness. This often clashed with the expectations of the DDR’s cultural landscape. The plaque itself is a testament to the efforts of musician Thomas Putensen and local businessman Jens Krafczyk. They rallied the community and collected donations to honor Biege’s legacy in his birthplace. Tragically, a stroke in 2012 silenced Biege’s voice, a devastating blow to any musician. Despite this, he continued to compose and arrange music until his death in 2018. He left behind a body of work that speaks to the human condition. He stood firm in his artistic integrity, a true “Sturkopf,” as some might say, reflecting the spirit of his Pomeranian roots. Holger Biege’s music serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of staying true to oneself. His story, etched in this plaque, echoes the challenges and triumphs of a life dedicated to artistic expression, even in the face of adversity.
