Across the Han River stands Hojang Bridge. Its sturdy beams connect Yongsan and Dongjak districts. Have you ever wondered about its past?

Hojang Bridge isn’t just a way to cross the river. It’s a silent witness to Seoul’s history. For years before its current form a pontoon bridge existed at this very spot. This was the only way across the Han River until the Hangang Railway Bridge opened in 1900. The first Hojang Bridge a simple footbridge opened in 1917. Sadly it was damaged by a flood just eight years later.

Then came the Korean War. South Korean troops bombed Hojang Bridge. Their goal was to slow down invading forces. This act tragically killed hundreds maybe even a thousand innocent people mostly refugees. They were unaware of the plan to destroy the bridge. The destruction of the bridge during the Korean War serves as a stark reminder of the devastation of war.

The bridge wasn’t fully rebuilt until 1954. In 1982 more lanes were added. They renamed it Hangang Bridge. The Hojang Bridge we see today is a testament to resilience. It stands as a symbol of Seoul’s strength and its ability to overcome adversity. It quietly bears witness to the city’s growth. The bridge carries eight lanes of bustling traffic today. It connects not only two parts of Seoul but also its past and future. As you look at the Hojang Bridge remember the lives lost and the city’s journey to rebuild.
