Deep within the sprawling Jenischpark, a silent giant stands watch. The Hohle Eiche, Hamburg’s mightiest pedunculate oak, has witnessed centuries of change. The Hohle Eiche isn’t just a tree. It’s a living monument, its hollowed trunk a testament to its enduring strength. This cavity, stretching from just above the ground to over four meters high, gives the tree its name – Hohle Eiche, or “Hollow Oak”. In 1972, the tree surgeon Michael Maurer reinforced the Hohle Eiche’s gaping maw with iron bars, preserving this natural wonder. The bark near the base displays a striking “plank effect,” a pattern of thick, interlocking plates. While the Hohle Eiche stands about 100 meters east of the Jenischhaus, it predates the park’s creation around 1800. The Jenischpark, once a private sanctuary, opened to the public in 1927. Today, the Hohle Eiche shares its home with other remarkable trees, a silent gathering of arboreal elders. Despite its age, estimated at approximately 350 years, the Hohle Eiche boasts a robust crown, though a few lower branches are missing. The tree’s vitality remains strong. Its massive crown stretches towards the sky, providing a haven for birds and a spectacle for visitors. The Hohle Eiche is a timeless presence in the heart of Hamburg, a reminder of the enduring power of nature.
