High above Salzburg the Hohensalzburg Fortress stands. Its imposing white stone seems to gleam even on a cloudy day. For centuries this mighty structure has watched over the city. It has witnessed countless stories unfold below.

The Hohensalzburg Fortress isn’t just a castle. It’s a testament to power. It began as a simple bailey with wooden walls in 1077 under Archbishop Gebhard von Helfenstein. But the prince-archbishops of Salzburg were ambitious. They expanded the fortress over centuries to reflect their growing influence. The Investiture Controversy played a part. Archbishop Gebhard’s conflict with Emperor Henry IV spurred the fortress’s expansion. The Archbishop sided with Pope Gregory VII and the German anti-king Rudolf of Rheinfelden. This fortified their position against the emperor.

The fortress grew. In 1462 ring walls and towers were added under Prince-Archbishop Burkhard II von Weißpriach. Leonhard von Keutschach further expanded it between 1495 and 1519. He even installed a primitive funicular railway. The Reisszug as it was known carried freight to the upper courtyard. It’s possibly the oldest operational railway in the world. The external bastions were added later. They were built fearing a Turkish invasion. Though the fortress was never truly besieged. It did face threats. During the German Peasants’ War in 1525 it withstood an attempted takeover. The deposed Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau died in its prison in 1617. Archbishop Paris of Lodron strengthened its defenses during the Thirty Years’ War.

Napoleon’s troops took the fortress without a fight in 1800. The last Prince-Archbishop fled to Vienna. For a time it was used as barracks storage and even a prison. It was finally abandoned as a military outpost in 1861.

The Hohensalzburg Fortress’s story isn’t finished. Refurbished in the late 19th century it became a major tourist attraction. The Festungsbahn funicular railway opened in 1892 providing easy access. It served as a prison again during World War I and held Nazi activists before Austria’s annexation in 1938. Even the renowned German artist Arno Lehmann lived and worked here from 1949 until his death in 1973.

Step inside the Hohensalzburg Fortress. Explore its magnificent state apartments. Marvel at the Golden Hall. Its opulent decoration speaks of the archbishops’ wealth and power. Listen to the sounds of the Salzburg Bull. This massive mechanical organ dating back to 1502 fills the fortress with music. This remarkable fortress stands as a symbol of Salzburg’s rich and complex past. A place where history whispers from every stone. A place where power ambition and resilience converge.
