Avenues named after generals. This is Hoheluft-West. It is a district in Hamburg also known as the “General’s Quarter”. Here, the streets echo with the names of famous military figures.

Hoheluft-West is a pricey residential area. Yet it offers some medium-priced apartments. You might find one for around 11 to 14 EUR per square meter.

Take a stroll down Roonstrasse. Imagine owning a house here. Most houses are owned by residents. They are unlikely to be sold soon. They will probably be inherited for the next 100 years.

Hoheluft-West is more than just grand houses. It has beautiful Wilhelminian and Art Nouveau facades. Green rear courtyards provide a peaceful escape. Small boutiques line the streets inviting you to browse.

Forget typical chain stores. Hoheluft-West offers individual up-market boutiques. Each reflects the owner’s unique style. Cafes offer relaxed breaks. Enjoy the atmosphere outside if the weather is nice.

You might see mothers pushing shiny prams. They meet for a latte macchiato. Playgrounds between Gneisenau- and Kottwitzstrasse are popular. There is a large adventure playground between Wrangelstrasse and Hoheluftchaussee.

Many restaurants offer diverse cuisines. The area feels similar to Eppendorf to the north. Hoheluft-West became part of Hamburg on April 1, 1938. This happened under the Greater Hamburg Act.

The Falkenried terraces are another feature. Find them between Falkenried and Löwenstrasse. These are three-story apartment blocks. They were built in Neo-Renaissance style in the early 1900s. Today, they are small one-bedroom flats. Beautiful terraces and yards connect the houses.

Hoheluft-West might not have the most children. The number of households with children is below Hamburg’s average. But children here have a high chance of attending a gymnasium. Around 78% do so. Fifteen kindergartens, two primary schools, and one secondary school educate the 1,300 children.

In Hoheluft-West residents earn about the same as any other Hamburg resident. Unemployment is below average. The percentage of residents with a migration background is also low. Residents are tolerant and open-minded. Like Eppendorf, it is a nice neighborhood for expatriates.

You can see Mansteinstraße 25. This is in the General’s Quarter. Also, check out Hoheluftchaussee 95 and Kottwitzstrasse. These streets capture the essence of Hoheluft-West.
