By 2022, that number dwindled, as 15 families made the difficult decision to withdraw their children. Yet, hope springs eternal. In 2023, four new families joined the Hoërskool Vryburger community, a small but significant victory against the declining enrollment trend. The school, however, has witnessed a simultaneous increase in teaching staff. Starting with 33 teachers in 2021, two more were added in 2022. Though two left in 2023, the overall teacher-to-learner ratio now stands at an impressive 1:24. This signifies smaller class sizes and potentially more individualized attention for each student. At the helm of Hoërskool Vryburger stands Christiaan Albertus Olivier, a steadfast leader who has navigated the school through fluctuating enrollment, staffing changes, and the ever-present pressure of matric pass rates. Speaking of matric, the 2023 results tell a story of both challenge and resilience. The pass rate dipped slightly to 87.4%, down from 89.7% in 2022. This placed Hoërskool Vryburger 496th in the provincial rankings, just below Hans Kekana Sec School and above Amos Maphanga Secondary School and Winterveldt High School, which tied at 497. The school is classified as a fee-paying institution within Quantile 5. This means it receives R803 per learner annually from the Department of Basic Education, while no-fee schools in the same quantile receive R1,602. However, like many schools, Hoërskool Vryburger likely supplements this funding with additional tuition fees to cover operational costs. In 2024, against all odds, Hoërskool Vryburger’s matric class achieved a remarkable 93.2% pass rate, a significant jump from the previous year. This marked not only the best pass rate for English high schools in Germiston but also a testament to the dedication of the students, teachers, and parents. Eleven distinctions and thirty-eight bachelor’s passes were celebrated, a testament to their resilience. The same year also saw the school’s junior and senior rugby teams achieving an unprecedented victory. Both teams won the Lions League Cup, marking the first time in Hoërskool Vryburger’s history that this double victory has been achieved. Their unbeaten run throughout the tournament and subsequent qualification for the Noordvaal Cup quarter-finals underscore the dedication and skill within the school’s rugby program.
