Standing before Hodge’s Bend Cemetery Plaque, you’re touching a piece of Texas history. The plaque marks the final resting place of Alexander Hodge and his family. Hodge, originally from Pennsylvania, was a veteran of the American Revolution, fighting under the legendary “Swamp Fox,” Francis Marion. Imagine the stories he could tell. Hodge was drawn to Texas in 1825, becoming one of Stephen F. Austin’s “Old Three Hundred” settlers. He received a generous land grant in 1828, which he aptly named “Hodge’s Bend.” This very cemetery lies within that original grant. The first heartbreaking burial here was Hodge’s wife, Ruth, in 1831. Hodge himself, after witnessing the birth pangs of a new nation, was laid to rest here in 1836. Hodge’s Bend Cemetery became the final resting place for many early settlers and their descendants, a testament to the hardships and triumphs of those early days. The last burial took place in 1942, marking the end of an era. Today, the Hodge’s Bend Cemetery Plaque stands as a reminder of the courage and resilience of these pioneers, their legacy forever intertwined with the story of Texas itself.
