Lost in thought, the Hockende Sculpture seems to contemplate the world. Here at Schwentnerring 6, we find a bronze figure created by Hans Joachim Frielinghaus. It is a piece that invites contemplation.

This is the Hockende Sculpture. It was created in 1967. The sculpture presents a reduced female figure. She is perched on a small, square plinth. The unclothed woman squats on her toes. She supports herself with her right hand. Her left forearm rests on her left knee.

Frielinghaus avoids narrative elements. He focuses on the body’s pose. He highlights the beauty of form. The Hockende Sculpture exudes a captivating tranquility. Its surface is subtly smoothed. Yet, it retains traces of its modeling.

Hans Joachim Frielinghaus was born in Stettin in 1937. He pursued philosophy. From 1967 to 1970, he studied at the Hochschule f\u00fcr Bildende K\u00fcnste in Hamburg under Gustav Seitz. He continued his studies at the Royal College of Art in London from 1970 to 1971. In 1976 and 1977, he received a scholarship for the Villa Massimo in Rome. Frielinghaus currently lives and works in Hamburg. He is a designer and sculptor. His sculptures are primarily found in the Hamburg area. Some are at the university.

Other artists have created similar depictions of squatting figures. Arthur Bock and Edgar Augustin are among them. They explored varied body postures. Their works offer different perspectives on this classic pose.

The Hockende Sculpture invites us to reflect on form and posture. It encourages us to find beauty in simplicity. Take a moment. Consider the Hockende Sculpture’s silent story.
