Founded in 1946 the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg stands proudly before you. Its story begins not with a grand opening but with resilience. Two intact buildings in a war-torn Freiburg became its first home. These weren’t just any buildings. One was the Wentzingerhaus on Münsterplatz a testament to Freiburg’s enduring spirit.

From those humble beginnings the Hochschule flourished. Think of the renowned musicians who walked these halls. Fritz Wunderlich a celebrated tenor honed his skills here. Legendary composers like Harald Genzmer and Brian Ferneyhough graced its classrooms. Many more distinguished musicians both teachers and students contributed to its legacy. Jö rg Brena for instance both studied and later taught here.

In 1954 a groundbreaking moment occurred. Wolfgang Fortner established the Institute for New Music. This was truly pioneering work. The institute collaborated with the experimental electronic studio of the Heinrich-Strobel-Stiftung. The collaboration with the Südwestfunk (now SWR) further elevated its reputation.

But the Hochschule’s ambition extended beyond its musical programs. In 2005 it created the Freiburg Institute for Musicians’ Medicine. This unique institute explores the connection between music and health. It partners with the Freiburg University Hospital a testament to its innovative spirit.

Notice the building itself. It’s not just a collection of classrooms. It’s a carefully crafted space designed for music. The architects considered every detail. Soundproofing was crucial. Short distances between rooms were essential. The building’s unique design a right ear shape from an aerial view. This design isn’t arbitrary. The distinctive folds in the facade minimize sound reflection ensuring optimal acoustics. A special listening point exists on the pond’s rotunda enhancing the soundscape.

The Hochschule’s growth wasn’t always easy. Funding was a recurring challenge. Yet through concerts and community support the necessary funds were secured. An extension including a chamber music hall a second foyer and additional rooms opened in 2000. A building for film music followed in 2011.

In 2015 a hailstorm caused significant damage to the concert hall. After its restoration it was renamed the Wolfgang-Hoffmann-Saal. The name honors a Freiburg mayor instrumental in the Hochschule’s establishment. Today it’s enhanced with 1000 square meters of photovoltaic modules a step towards sustainability.

Today this place is more than a school. It’s a vibrant hub. It boasts international partnerships with conservatories in Odessa Rochester Warsaw Sydney and Kyoto. From its humble beginnings to its current standing the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg is a place of innovation collaboration and extraordinary musical achievement. It’s a place where music’s power resonates not only within its walls but throughout the world.
