What secrets does Hochdorf hold? Hochdorf whispers tales from a time long before Freiburg’s first stones were laid. Hochdorf’s story begins in 773. This charming district of Freiburg im Breisgau first appears in records detailing land transfers to the Lorsch monastery. This predates Freiburg’s own recorded history by over three centuries. Imagine Hochdorf then, a small settlement nestled amidst rolling hills, its inhabitants unaware of the bustling city that would one day rise nearby. Hochdorf wasn’t alone. Its smaller neighbor, Benzhausen, joined the historical record just a few years later in a document from the St. Gallen monastery. By 1526, these two villages boasted a combined population of around 300 souls. The Thirty Years’ War took its toll, decimating the population to a mere 160 by 1648. Yet, Hochdorf persevered. It slowly rebuilt and grew, reaching 1,000 residents in 1963. Then, growth exploded. Hochdorf became Freiburg’s fastest-growing district, now home to over 5,000 people. At the heart of Hochdorf stands the St. Martin’s Church. Its origins stretch back to 1147. The church has been rebuilt and renovated many times. The current structure dates to 1717. Inside, admire the late Baroque casing of an organ originally built by Xaver Bernauer in 1804. The original mechanics were replaced in 1913. However, the historic shell remains. Close by, you’ll find the Tunisee and Silbersee. These lakes, born from the construction of the nearby A5 Autobahn, offer recreational escapes. The Tunisee even hosts the annual “Sea You” music festival. Hochdorf seamlessly blends its rich history with modern amenities. This vibrant community offers a fascinating glimpse into the past and the present.
