Is a warship’s spirit tied to the sea, even when it rests on land? Here at HMAS Ipswich Naval memorial, one might ponder that very question. This isn’t where HMAS Ipswich sailed her final nautical mile. However, this memorial, etched with the ship’s name and decommissioning date, stands as a powerful reminder of her service. HMAS Ipswich, a Bathurst-class corvette, was a child of war, built in Brisbane and commissioned in 1942. Her story is one of escort duty, protecting vital supply lines in the Pacific, Indian Ocean, and even the Mediterranean Sea. Imagine the tension, the constant threat of enemy submarines and aircraft, as HMAS Ipswich tirelessly shepherded convoys through treacherous waters. And her bravery was not in vain. On February 11, 1944, HMAS Ipswich, alongside HMAS Launceston and HMIS Jumna, engaged and destroyed the Japanese submarine RO-110 off India’s coast. Today, this memorial serves as a silent sentinel, urging us to remember the sacrifices made by those who sailed aboard HMAS Ipswich and countless other vessels like her. Lest we forget.
