How would you like to visit one of the most artistically and culturally historic buildings in the Salzburg region? That would be the Pilgrimage Church of St. Leonhard. The church’s history is long. It was first documented in 1407. But its origins go back even further to the beginning of the 13th century.
Originally, the church was dedicated to St. George. Later, a dedication to St. Leonhard was added. The adoration of St. Leonhard grew in the 18th century. Consequently, the pilgrimage church received many bequests. The numerous votive offerings inside testify to its importance as a pilgrimage site. St. Leonhard is the patron saint of farmers, horses, and livestock.
Before 1816, St. Leonhard belonged to Berchtesgaden. In 1816, it was ceded to Salzburg. Thus, it became part of Austria. Ever since, the church has belonged to the Arch Abby of St. Peter in Salzburg.
Now let’s observe the architecture and furnishings. The church sits atop a rock formation. It is nestled impressively between the Untersberg mountain and the Konigsseeache river. The nave is topped with a high red tower. A baroque, onion-shaped dome caps the tower.
Inside St. Leonhard, notice the large high altar. See also the two side altars. They are made of Untersberg and Adnet marble. The paintings adorning the altars are especially high quality. These are noteworthy.

St. Leonhard has some special features. During the Christmas season, two famous creche sets are displayed. One is the Mount of Olives Creche. It features wax figures from 1890. The Advent Market in St. Leonhard is also special. It is the oldest Advent market in Salzburg. It is also the one most steeped in tradition. During Advent weekends, you can find regional products and artworks for sale. The St. Leonhard Advent Market is non-commercial. All proceeds are donated to charities serving those in need.
The Leonhardiritt Festival is another highlight. It takes place annually on the Sunday closest to November 6. The spectacular pilgrimage parade is the highlight of the festival. Countless horse-drawn coaches and riders make their way from Marktschellenberg to St. Leonhard in Grodig. After a mass, the Kranzlstechen takes place. This is a wreath-snatching tournament.
