Considering Hizma’s name meaning “The bundle,” it is time to unravel its story. Hizma is a Palestinian town with a history stretching back to biblical times. Today, we are standing just seven kilometers from Jerusalem’s Old City. This location places us at a fascinating crossroads of ancient heritage and modern life.

Hizma is no ordinary place. It has layers of history that whisper stories of Israelites, Romans, Ottomans, and more. Identified with the biblical town of Azmaveth, Hizma has been inhabited since the Iron Age. Pottery shards discovered here confirm this link. It connects us to the Israelite tribe of Benjamin.

Imagine Hizma during the Roman period. It was a center for stoneware production. The local limestone was perfect for crafting fine vessels. Artisans turned vases and bowls on lathes. They meticulously carved mugs by hand. These items found their way throughout the Jerusalem area. They were used in daily life and rituals.

In 1931, a significant discovery was made here in Hizma. A burial cave revealed ossuaries. These held the remains of the deceased. Inscriptions in Hebrew and Aramaic adorned the ossuaries. These inscriptions provided names like Hoshea and Mariam. Another ossuary, found later, belonged to Yehohanah. She was the granddaughter of the High Priest Theophillus. This connected Hizma to important figures in Jewish history.

Centuries passed, and Hizma became part of the Ottoman Empire. In 1596, tax records listed it as Hamza. Twenty-eight Muslim households resided here. They paid taxes on their crops and livestock. Life was simple. Agriculture was the main source of income.

Edward Robinson visited Hizma in 1838. He found it deserted. Villagers had fled to escape conscription. By 1863, the village had 200 inhabitants. Ancient materials were visible in some houses. Cisterns hinted at a long history.

The Survey of Western Palestine described Hizma in 1883. It was a small stone village. It stood high on a prominent hill. Olive trees covered the slopes. A well provided water to the west.

During the British Mandate, Hizma’s population grew. By 1945, 750 Muslims lived here. They cultivated cereals and olives on the land. After the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, Hizma came under Jordanian rule.

Since 1967, Hizma has been under Israeli occupation. Today, Hizma has a population of over 7,000 residents. It has faced challenges related to land and access. The West Bank barrier has cut off parts of the village.

Despite these challenges, Hizma remains a vibrant community. Its people continue to cultivate olives and cereals. They work in various sectors. They strive to preserve their heritage. They look forward to a better future.

As we stand here in Hizma, we can feel the weight of history. We can see the resilience of its people. Hizma is more than just a town. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of Palestine. Its story continues to unfold. It is a story of survival, adaptation, and hope.
