Once, New York City was called New Angoulême. It was named by an Italian explorer in honor of a French king. Let’s explore the History of Time in New York.

Giovanni da Verrazzano sailed into Upper New York Bay in 1524. He named the area New Angoulême. This was in honor of Francis I, King of France.

Later, in 1609, Henry Hudson explored the area. He worked for the Dutch East India Company. Hudson noted the abundant beaver population. Beaver pelts were valuable in Europe. This led to Dutch trading colonies in the New World.

In 1624-1625, the Dutch founded a fur trading post in Lower Manhattan. This marked the start of European settlement. Fort Amsterdam’s construction began soon after.

The Dutch West India Company brought African slaves to work. They built a wall to defend against attacks. Willem Kieft, a director, fought against Native Americans. A peace treaty was signed in 1645.

Peter Stuyvesant became director general in 1647. New Amsterdam gained self-government in 1652. It was incorporated as a city in 1653.

In 1664, the English conquered the area. They renamed it New York after the Duke of York. By this time, about 20% of the city’s population was of African descent. Some places still have Dutch names like Harlem and Brooklyn.

Sentiment grew for more autonomy as the colony prospered. Jacob Leisler led a rebellion. He controlled the city from 1689 to 1691.

By 1700, the Lenape population was reduced to 200. The English continued to import slaves. By the 1770s, slaves made up less than 25% of the city’s population.

The Stamp Act Congress met in New York City in 1765. This was the first organized resistance to British authority. New York City became a British stronghold during the war.

The city served as the national capital from 1785 to 1790. George Washington was inaugurated at Federal Hall. The US Bill of Rights was drafted there.

The Erie Canal’s opening in 1825 boosted the city’s economy. It connected New York to the Great Lakes. Immigration increased.

Waves of immigrants arrived from Europe. This changed the city’s composition. The New York City Police Department was established.

In 1898, the five boroughs were consolidated. This formed the modern City of New York.

New York became a world center for commerce and communication. The subway began operating in 1904.

New York City became a major destination for African Americans. This occurred during the Great Migration.

Despite the Great Depression, skyscrapers like the Empire State Building were built.

After World War II, the United Nations moved to Manhattan.

Today, New York City stands as a testament to time’s relentless march. From its humble beginnings as a Dutch trading post to its current status as a global hub, its story is etched in every street, building, and cultural landmark.
