Ever wondered what it’s like to stand at the edge of two worlds? Here, at the Historischer Grenzstein zwischen Börnsen und Bergedorf, you’re doing just that. This isn’t just a stone. It’s a marker of history, a silent witness to shifting borders.
The Historischer Grenzstein zwischen Börnsen und Bergedorf marks the old Hamburg border with former Prussia. Today, it shows the boundary between Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. These are two neighboring states in the metropolitan region.
If you look closely at the Historischer Grenzstein zwischen Börnsen und Bergedorf, you might feel the weight of history. Imagine a time when borders meant more. When crossing this line meant entering another realm of laws and customs. This stone was a significant marker.
The significance of these old border markers was revived in 2006 and 2007. Citizens from Börnsen and the “Heimatbund und Geschichtsverein Herzogtum Lauenburg” brought them back to public attention. Their work ensures we remember the stories these stones hold.
This area is part of a “border-crossing hike”. The Bergedorf citizens’ association created a teaching path in 1979. It runs along the Geesthang from the observatory, over the Schorrhöhe, Gojenberg, and cemetery. It ends at the entrance of Chapel 2.
Continuing on, you’ll find remnants of the historic border wall near the Historischer Grenzstein zwischen Börnsen und Bergedorf. This is more than just a walk. It is a journey through time.
In 1970, about 50 tree signs were put up on the western part of the path. These signs provided information on the flora and fauna. This was in the park forest cemetery established in 1907. Many visitors don’t know that the northern Bergedorf cemetery extension from the 1950s is in Wentorf-Börnsen.
In 2007, the route of the teaching path was slightly changed for the “160 years Bergedorf citizens’ association”. The BBV, the municipality of Börnsen, and the Heimatbund collaborated. They expanded the concept to the entire high-altitude hiking trail. It now stretches from the observatory to Börnsen.
Over 60 marked posts with information texts guide visitors. They traverse the approximately 3 km long Bergedorf – Börnsen nature and history trail. This beautiful route was re-signed in 2007. It was inaugurated on October 14 as part of a joint tour.
A colored leaflet with brief information and a 50-page explanation were created. You can find both as downloadable PDF files. The colored leaflet is available at the Bergedorf-Information in the Hasse-Haus. It’s also at the Museum für Bergedorf und die Vierlande. You can find it at the Bergedorf Castle, the Grundeigentümer-Verein Bergedorf. Also, it is available at the municipality of Börnsen, and Krügersches Haus Geesthacht.
Botanical tours of the Geesthang and the cemetery are offered by the BBV. Tours along the border stones can be booked through the municipality of Börnsen.
