Ever wondered what it felt like to step back into the golden age of railways? Here at the Historische Eisenbahn Mannheim e.V., you don’t have to just imagine. You can experience it.
The Historische Eisenbahn Mannheim e.V. is more than just a museum. It is a vibrant community, a meeting place for seasoned railway professionals, passionate hobbyists, and anyone captivated by the romance of the rails. Founded in 2000, this non-profit association is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich railway heritage of the Ludwigshafen-Mannheim-Heidelberg region.
Our main goal is to build a collection of historic railway vehicles. We want to show the development of shunting technology. Six small locomotives have already been restored. Two of them have been passed on to new owners.
Look around and you’ll see the impressive Großdiesellok 218 225-1. Since 2007, this has been displayed in Mannheim. The DB Museum Nürnberg provided this with the help of the Universität Karlsruhe.
Before that, from 2002 to 2007, we cared for the famous Dampflok 18 316. This was on behalf of the Landesmuseum für Technik und Arbeit in Mannheim.
Notice the Hellentalbahn Elektrolok E 244 31? It is the oldest vehicle in our collection. The Universität Karlsruhe let us have it. It pioneered the three-phase drive technology used in modern trains like the ICE.
Our collection includes two rail-free vehicles. A mobile hydraulic crane and a cable excavator may seem like mere tools. But these restored machines from the 70s always thrill visitors.
But the Historische Eisenbahn Mannheim e.V. offers more than just exhibits. We host exhibitions, lectures, special trips, and educational programs. We bring railway technology, transport history, and industrial history to life.
Step inside our fully preserved postal car. It is a testament to the once-vital railway postal service. We also own another former postal car. It was converted into an office train control car and we maintain it in that form.
Feel free to talk to our long-time hobby and professional railway workers. We offer student groups insights into the world of railways. We see ourselves as a forum for information about historical and modern railways. We can also arrange railway services through our commercial partners and sponsors. In addition to our work, we provide opportunities for social exchange on all things railway-related.
Consider joining the Historische Eisenbahn Mannheim e.V.. We are always looking for new members. We need help restoring old locomotives or building our model railway. Passive members can also support us with their contributions.
Before you leave, remember that you can rent our space for family celebrations, company parties, or similar events. We have all the amenities you need for a pleasant evening. There are two different rooms and a courtyard available. Free parking is available in front of our property. The rental price includes tableware, glasses, cutlery, sanitary facilities, and final cleaning. We will take care of the catering. Drinks must be purchased from us.
So, as you leave the Historische Eisenbahn Mannheim e.V., take with you not just memories. Take a piece of railway history. Remember the dedication and passion that keeps these iron horses alive. They are rumbling through time, and they keep inspiring generations to come.
