Have you ever thought about where trains got their water? You might be surprised to know that the railways used ingenious systems to keep their steam engines running. Right here in front of you is a remnant of that time, the Historic Railway Water Supply Facility and Pump Station. Built in 1913, this station was key to keeping the North Coast Railway line chugging along. The early steam engines needed a lot of water to make the journey up the coast and back. The source of this precious liquid was Lagoon Creek. It was a busy life for this pump station, with water being pumped constantly to service the steam locomotive trains. As you can see, all that remains is a big concrete slab and foundations. The actual machinery was all taken away in 1968 when the diesel engines replaced the steam engines. In the 1930s, the station pumped approximately 1.6 million litres of water every week. Imagine all that water, constantly powering the giant trains, connecting cities and supplying vital goods. The Historic Railway Water Supply Facility and Pump Station, though quiet now, stands as a reminder of the ingenuity and effort it took to maintain the vital rail network that built Queensland.
