Beneath the Georgia sun, Historic Grayson Stadium has witnessed a century of baseball dreams. This isn’t just a stadium. It’s a living, breathing piece of Savannah’s soul. Historic Grayson Stadium opened its gates in 1926 as Municipal Stadium. It quickly became the home of the Savannah Indians. The stadium’s early days were marked by a visit from baseball royalty. Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig graced the field in an exhibition game.

Historic Grayson Stadium faced its first major challenge in 1940. A devastating hurricane ripped through Savannah, severely damaging the stadium. The wooden bleachers were destroyed, leaving only the concrete outfield wall standing. Undeterred, the city rallied behind General William L. Grayson, a Spanish-American War veteran, to rebuild. With funding from the Works Progress Administration, the stadium rose from the ashes in 1941. It was renamed in Grayson’s honor, becoming Historic Grayson Stadium. The resilient spirit of Savannah was embodied in the rebuilt stadium.

Over the decades, Historic Grayson Stadium hosted a variety of teams. The Savannah Indians, Athletics, Redlegs, Reds, Pirates, White Sox, Senators, Braves, Cardinals, Sand Gnats, and finally, the Savannah Bananas, all called Historic Grayson Stadium home. The stadium also played a pivotal role in local history. It hosted the first integrated South Atlantic League game in 1953, marking a significant moment in the fight for civil rights. High school rivalries played out on its field. The annual Thanksgiving Day game between Savannah High School and Benedictine Military School was a tradition from 1927 to 1959.

Historic Grayson Stadium wasn’t just for local teams. Big names like Hank Aaron and Mickey Mantle played exhibition games here. The stadium even hosted the Boston Red Sox for spring training in 1932. Through renovations in 2007, 2009, and 2024, Historic Grayson Stadium evolved while retaining its classic charm. The 2024 renovation brought a modernized grandstand appearance, replacing old bleachers with stadium-style bucket seating. The capacity expanded to 5,000, ensuring that more fans could experience the magic of Historic Grayson Stadium.

Even in the 21st century, Historic Grayson Stadium remains a vital part of Savannah’s sports scene. It hosted the GHSA Baseball Championships in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Today, Historic Grayson Stadium is known for the Savannah Bananas and their unique brand of “Banana Ball.” This fast-paced, entertaining version of baseball has brought a new generation of fans to the historic ballpark, ensuring its legacy continues. Historic Grayson Stadium stands as a testament to Savannah’s love for baseball. It’s a place where memories are made, legends are born, and the crack of the bat echoes through the ages.
