“Flooding? Not here anymore!” That’s what Atlantans say about Historic Fourth Ward Park. It’s more than just a pretty green space. Historic Fourth Ward Park is a testament to innovative solutions.

Historic Fourth Ward Park sits in Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward. It is near Ponce City Market and the BeltLine Eastside Trail. This 17-acre park is divided into two sections.

Once, this area faced severe flooding from Clear Creek. A $40 million tunnel plan was proposed. But Bill Eisenhauer, an engineer-economist, had a better idea. He envisioned a green infrastructure solution. This led to the creation of Historic Fourth Ward Park.

The park’s centerpiece is a 5-acre stormwater retention pond. This pond can hold 4 million gallons of water. It slowly releases the water to the city’s sewage treatment plant. This system protects against 500-year floods.

Historic Fourth Ward Park has landscaped walkways and bridges. Observation points dot the landscape. Grassy fields invite relaxation. A shaded playground and splashpad offer relief from the heat. The park significantly increased green space. It helps manage the urban heat island effect. Plant species enhance water infiltration. This limits excess water daily.

The Historic Fourth Ward Park also features an amphitheater. Bermudagrass cushions the seating area. It surrounds part of the pond.

Don’t miss the skate park at 830 Willoughby Way. This 15,000-square-foot facility offers bowls and smooth concrete mounds. It’s Atlanta’s first public skate park. Tony Hawk’s foundation contributed $25,000 to the project.

The Historic Fourth Ward Park came about in phases. Phase I opened in February 2011. It features waterfalls and the stormwater retention pond. Phase II added a playground and splash pad. There is also an urban forest and recirculating stream. A grand stair and wildflower meadow complete this section. The section near Ponce City Market includes a grand entry and event lawn.

The park has faced criticism. Some say it spurred development and gentrification. Expensive lofts and upscale restaurants have appeared.

Historic Fourth Ward Park stands as a symbol. It represents green solutions and community transformation. It demonstrates how innovative design can solve environmental challenges. It enhances urban life.
