Imagine stepping through wrought iron gates onto land once owned by naturalist John James Audubon. Here stands the Hispanic Society of America. Archer Milton Huntington founded it in 1904. He envisioned a free public museum. It would be a reference library for the study of Spanish art and culture. It includes Portugal, Latin America, and the Philippines.

The Hispanic Society’s collections are extraordinary. They address nearly every aspect of culture in Spain. Its reach extends into Portugal and Latin America up to the 20th century. Despite its location in a predominantly Dominican neighborhood, the society focuses on Old Spain and its culture in former colonies.

Inside, discover over 900 paintings and 6000 watercolors and drawings. They showcase Spanish masters such as El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, and Sorolla. The sculpture collection features outstanding pieces. They span from the first millennium B.C. to the early 20th century. Marvel at ceramics, glass, furniture, textiles, ironwork, and jewelry. These are among the society’s 6000 decorative arts objects.

The library holds over 300000 books and periodicals. This includes 15000 volumes printed before 1701. There are also over 250000 manuscripts, letters, and documents. These date from the 11th century to the present.

Don’t miss the Sorolla Room. It displays Vision of Spain. Archer Huntington commissioned these 14 massive paintings in 1911. Sorolla completed them between 1913 and 1919. Stretching over 200 linear feet, the paintings depict scenes from different regions of Spain.

Consider the building’s design. Huntington played a large role in its creation. The main building’s design came from Huntington’s cousin, Charles P. Huntington. The neoclassical design reflects the institution’s reputable status.

The Hispanic Society faced challenges. Sentiments toward Spain were once negative in America. This stemmed from Spain’s colonial ambitions. Huntington recognized the importance of Hispanic culture in American history. He established the museum to promote Hispanic art and scholarship.

In recent years, the Hispanic Society has undergone renovations and expansions. The museum expanded into the former Museum of the American Indian. Though it closed for renovations it reopened in June 2023.

Visiting the Hispanic Society is free. This aligns with Archer Huntington’s trust. It ensures public access to these treasures. Guillaume Kientz became the director in 2020.

The Hispanic Society’s story is one of dedication. It preserves and celebrates the rich heritage of Spanish and Portuguese cultures. It offers a unique glimpse into a world of art, literature, and history. The Hispanic Society of America remains a treasure. It enriches New York City’s cultural landscape.
