Have you ever wandered through a park where history whispers from every tree? Welcome to the Hirschpark in Hamburg a green oasis brimming with stories.

Established around 1620 by A Oldehorst this land estate evolved into the park we see today. A magnificent four-row lime tree avenue remains a striking relic from that era. Imagine the grandeur of the estate when Johann Caesar Godeffroy purchased it in 1786. It was then the largest in the area. Godeffroy commissioned the renowned architect Christian Frederick Hansen to design a classicist manor house. This building still stands today serving as a ballet school.

Around 1800 a thatched-roof cavalier’s house was added. This charming building now houses Witthus a tea room serving homemade cakes and Russian smoke tea. Interestingly it served as the residence of writer and organ builder Hans Henny Jahnn from 1950 until his death in 1959. A commemorative plaque and a boulder in the park honor his memory.

The Hirschpark is a landscape garden. It features wide meadows impressive individual trees picturesque groups of trees and smaller wooded areas. A winding path system connects these features creating scenic viewpoints. One such viewpoint offers stunning Elbe River views from a slightly hidden spot on the Geesthang hillside.

The park boasts two formal ornamental gardens in the French style dating back to around 1855. A small well-maintained cottage garden sits before Witthus. A larger one near the manor house was once an antique garden.

Around 1860 Johan Cesar Godeffroy a direct descendant of Johann Caesar Godeffroy established a deer enclosure. Today this enclosure is home to fallow deer reindeer waterfowl and peacocks. The Hirschpark’s name is derived from this enclosure.

In 1924 the Blankenese community acquired the property. Three years later the city of Altona opened it to the public. Ferdinand Tutenberg transformed it into a public park.

Today the Hirschpark with its remarkable lime tree avenue is a popular destination especially for families. Some of the magnificent centuries-old trees are perfect for climbing. A playground behind Godeffroy’s house adds to the fun for children.

The Hirschpark is a registered garden monument a testament to its enduring historical and cultural significance. So take your time explore its winding paths discover its hidden gems and let the stories of the Hirschpark unfold before you.
