Slipping on the scree of Hirschangerkopf, I imagined myself as a chamois, nimble and sure-footed. Hirschangerkopf, also known as the Reichenhaller Hochthron, stands tall at 1769 meters. This peak offers a unique perspective on the surrounding landscape. Its west-facing slopes allow for hiking late into autumn, a hidden gem for those seeking solitude. The trail to Hirschangerkopf begins near the small settlement of Hallthurm, nestled between Lattengebirge and Untersberg. From a hiker’s parking lot just north of the railway crossing, a forested path leads you upwards. Initially, the ascent is marked by simple stone cairns, guiding you through the dense woods. As you climb, the trees begin to thin, revealing glimpses of the stunning vistas to come. The trail steepens considerably as you approach the Fadererschneid, a ridge offering breathtaking views to the north. From the hunting lodge perched on the Fadererschneid, the trail is clearly marked in red and with stone markers. The path along the ridge is narrow and sometimes exposed, with sheer drops on one side. This thrilling section leads you through picturesque spots, perfect for a moment of rest. The final stretch to the summit involves a scramble through Latschen, a type of mountain pine. A sharp left turn brings you onto a marked trail coming from the ruins of the Vierkaseralm. Across a meadow, a spring and a signpost mark the way to the saddle just south of the summit. A short climb over a 10-meter rock step leads you to the summit of Hirschangerkopf, marked by a cross and a summit register. The descent can be made via the same route, taking care not to miss the turnoff to the Fadererschneid. For a less strenuous descent, the trail to the Vierkaseralm offers an alternative route back to the starting point. Hirschangerkopf may not be as famous as some of the towering peaks in the region, but its quiet trails and stunning views make it a truly rewarding climb. The memory of the crisp mountain air, the thrill of the exposed ridge, and the panoramic views from the summit will stay with you long after you’ve descended back to the valley.
