Amaterasu’s blessing shines upon us. Welcome to Hirota-jinja Shrine. This isn’t just any shrine. It’s steeped in history. Legend says Empress Jingu founded it in the 3rd century. She followed Amaterasu’s divine instructions. The Goddess of the Sun commanded the Empress to enshrine herself and other gods in Hirota. The shrine’s location played a key role. Nishinomiya’s name meaning “shrine of the west” points directly to Hirota-jinja Shrine. The town’s very identity is rooted in this sacred place.

Hirota-jinja Shrine is more than a legend. It boasts Imperial patronage. Emperor Murakami in 965 ordered Imperial messengers to report events to Japan’s guardian kami. Hirota-jinja Shrine was among the chosen sixteen. Emperor Ichijo later added it to the list in 991. This shows the shrine’s enduring importance. By the 11th century Emperor Shirakawa bestowed the title “Hirota Grand Shrine”. It remains the only grand shrine in Hyogo Prefecture. The Imperial distinction sets it apart from others who simply use the title “taisha”.

From 1871 to 1946 Hirota-jinja Shrine held a top rank. The government officially recognized it as one of the Kanpei-taisha. The shrine’s prestige extended beyond its historical significance. Its beauty is renowned too. The kobanomitsuba tsutsuji azaleas are a sight to behold. These azaleas with three small leaves are a special treasure. Twenty thousand of them bloom gloriously each April. This makes Hirota-jinja Shrine a stunning place to visit.

Hirota-jinja Shrine isn’t just a place of history and beauty. It’s a vibrant hub of activity. The shrine hosts many events throughout the year. These include various festivals and special days for prayer and worship. Each celebration shows the ongoing reverence for Amaterasu Omikami. The shrine offers daily rituals along with monthly and seasonal ceremonies. The dedication is a testament to the shrine’s enduring power. Visitors can witness these ancient traditions. They connect with the past and the present.
