Gazing across the sprawling vista from Hinksey Hill, one can’t help but feel a sense of connection to the past. Hinksey Hill isn’t just a residential area. It’s a vantage point offering a breathtaking panorama of Oxford. This hill, a stone’s throw south of Oxford’s heart, holds centuries of history within its slopes. Hinksey Hill was originally part of Berkshire. It became part of Oxfordshire after the 1974 boundary changes.

Until the 1970s, the road winding up Hinksey Hill was a vital artery, the A34. With the completion of the Abingdon Bypass, it transitioned to a quieter, unclassified road. At the base of Hinksey Hill lies the Hinksey Hill Interchange. This is where the Abingdon By-Pass merges with the Southern By-Pass Road. The hilltop boasts the Old Berkeley Golf Course. This course was once the private domain of Lord Berkeley of Berkeley Castle. Today, it serves as a nature reserve, a haven for dog walkers, and a place to soak in those iconic views of Oxford. These very views captivated the renowned artist William Turner. One of his pieces, “Oxford from Hinksey Hill,” fetched a staggering £18,900 at Christie’s in 2022.

The land comprising much of Hinksey Hill belonged to the Earls of Abingdon. In the 1910s, the 7th Earl subdivided and sold the land in acre-sized plots. Hinksey Hill is also known as the home of the Priors, a local philanthropic family. Imagine standing here, much like William Turner did, capturing the beauty of Oxford’s skyline. The “dreaming spires,” as they’re often called, rise majestically in the distance. Hinksey Hill provides a unique perspective on this historic city, a blend of nature and urban splendor. As you descend from Hinksey Hill, carry with you the echoes of the past. Remember the artists, the Earls, and the families who have shaped this tranquil haven overlooking the bustling city of Oxford.
