A whisper of salt and history hangs in the air. Welcome to Hingham Bay.

Hingham Bay is more than just a body of water. It’s a living testament to the forces of nature and human endeavor. For thousands of years the Massachusett people thrived here. They fished its waters harvested its bounty and lived in harmony with its rhythms.

Imagine their lives. They built their homes near the shore. They navigated the bay in their canoes. They knew every current every hidden cove. Then came the Europeans. The settlers arrived in the 17th century. They clashed with the native population. King Philip’s War changed everything. The native people were displaced.

But life continued. The bay became a vital center for fishing. Later it played a significant role in American history. During the Revolutionary War military posts were established on Peddocks Island. The strategically important Hull Gut entrance to Hingham Bay was carefully guarded.

Fast forward to the 20th century. The Fore River Shipyard sprang up. This was a colossal undertaking. During World War II hundreds of ships were built there. These ships sailed out into the Atlantic Ocean protecting the nation’s interests. They launched from Hingham Bay.

The bay was even considered as a site for the United Nations Headquarters after the war. It also was proposed as a nuclear power plant location. Ultimately a different site in Plymouth was chosen.

Today Hingham Bay is a treasure. The Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area protects much of its beauty. The Weir River Estuary Park Committee works to safeguard its delicate ecosystem. Bumpkin Island Grape Island and other smaller islands offer peaceful retreats. They invite you to explore the rich history and serene beauty of this remarkable place. Look around. Breathe in the salty air. Feel the history beneath your feet. Hingham Bay awaits.
