Beneath a wide-open sky, where clouds drift lazily, lies the Himmelmoor. This isn’t just any wetland. Himmelmoor is Schleswig-Holstein’s largest high moor, a place where nature whispers secrets of the past and present. The name, Himmelmoor, meaning “heaven’s moor,” evokes a sense of tranquility, but the story of this place is a blend of serene beauty and the echoes of industry. For nearly 150 years, the Himmelmoor wasn’t a haven for wildlife, but a site of peat extraction. The scars of this industry are still visible today. The straight ditches, dikes, and the old tracks of the peat railway tell a tale of hard labor. Prisoners, and later, prisoners of war and forced laborers during World War II, toiled in these bogs. Their efforts fueled the local economy, but also left an indelible mark on the landscape. Today, nature is reclaiming the Himmelmoor. Walk along the four-kilometer nature trail, a path that meanders through a reborn ecosystem. Springy peat gives way to birch forests and wooden boardwalks. Along the way, information boards reveal the remarkable flora and fauna that call this place home. Rare birds like the snipe and curlew now grace the skies. Carnivorous sundew plants glisten in the sun, while dragonflies and butterflies dance over the cotton grass. Even reptiles, like the common European adder and the smooth snake, have found refuge here. The Himmelmoor offers more than just a walk through nature. From Easter to October, experience a journey back in time aboard the peat railway. A diesel locomotive from the 1950s pulls open carriages along the old tracks, offering a glimpse into the moor’s industrial past. The Torfbahn Himmelmoor association meticulously maintains the railway and locomotives, keeping the history of this place alive. As you stand at one of the three viewpoints overlooking the moor lake and the former peat extraction areas, take a moment to absorb the duality of the Himmelmoor.
