A haven in the heart of Berlin’s Wedding district. That’s Himmelbeet. A vibrant intercultural community garden. It’s more than just a place to grow vegetables. It’s a testament to community spirit. It’s a place where people from all walks of life come together.

Himmelbeet wasn’t always here. It started in 2012 with a dream. A plan to create a garden on the roof of a shopping center. However building regulations delayed the project. Eventually Himmelbeet found a new home on a vacant lot. This became the garden’s base in 2013.

Today Himmelbeet is a thriving oasis. It boasts 50 communal plots. People share the work and the bounty. Individuals and organizations also lease individual plots. There are about 225 of these. The demand far exceeds the supply.

The heart of Himmelbeet is its café. Constructed from recycled materials. It’s a symbol of sustainability. The café uses ingredients grown in the garden. It serves vegetarian food local beers and herbal teas. The café’s success helps fund the garden. It also won a prestigious architecture award in 2015.

Himmelbeet is also involved in educational projects. They help build urban gardens in schools. They offer workshops on gardening environmental education and nutrition. They even host events like a monthly bike repair workshop. It’s a space for learning sharing and growing. Both literally and figuratively.

The garden’s resilience is remarkable. In 2021 it had to relocate again. It’s now flourishing at a new location on Gartenstrasse. This highlights the garden’s tenacity and its importance to the community.

Himmelbeet stands as a symbol of hope and community. It’s a reminder that even in a bustling city. Nature connection and social connection are possible. So take a moment to appreciate this beautiful space. It’s a unique gem within Berlin.
