The Hilltop Reservation covers over 284 acres. It’s a relatively new park in Essex County. The area has seen a variety of uses over the centuries. Originally, it served agricultural purposes in the 1600s. Later, it housed institutions like the Essex County penitentiary, a tuberculosis sanatorium, and a mental hospital. Even a leaf composting site once called this land home. Since 2001, it’s been designated a Conservation Easement. The Hilltop Conservancy, along with Essex County, has been working tirelessly to restore the area. They are focused on converting former demolition sites into thriving wildlife habitats. Some parts of the Hilltop Reservation even have the “Wildlife Habitat” certification from the National Wildlife Federation.
The Hilltop Reservation is also interwoven with the history of the Lenape Trail. This 36-mile trail connects various parks and municipalities throughout Essex County. While it originally skirted the reservation’s edge, the Lenape Trail was rerouted through the park in 2017. This now allows hikers to experience the restored meadows, the forested ridgetop, and historical landmarks like Prisoner’s Pond and White Rock. Within the Hilltop Reservation, the trail meanders through areas actively undergoing restoration. Near Prisoner’s Pond, the only year-round water source in the park, you might see volunteers clearing debris, removing invasive species, and planting native trees. Further along, the trail showcases a successful restoration of a 3-acre upland area. This former asphalt surface is now a vibrant meadow of native grasses and wildflowers. As you walk, interpretive signs share insights into the park’s history and the diverse wildlife that calls it home. A remarkable feature of Hilltop Reservation is the 15-acre grassland restoration area. This restored area, once the site of sanatorium buildings, marks the first major habitat restoration project undertaken by the Hilltop Conservancy. This area is especially breathtaking in the spring and summer.
