“Did they really rename the entire church?” a newcomer whispered, her eyes wide with a blend of awe and amusement as she gazed at the Hillsong Brisbane Campus. The Hillsong Brisbane Campus, formerly known as Garden City Christian Church, stands as a testament to faith and transformation. Its roots stretch back to 1955, when Pastor Garnett Budge first established it as the Mt. Gravatt Assembly of God. Under the visionary leadership of Senior Pastor Dr. Reginald Klimionok in the 1980s, the church experienced a period of remarkable growth. A new building, able to accommodate over 2,000 worshippers, was erected next to the original site on Rover Street. This expansion saw its membership swell to over 3,500, earning it the distinction of being Australia’s first megachurch. In 2009, a new chapter unfolded when Brian Houston and Bobbie Houston, already renowned figures in the Hillsong Church, took the helm as Senior Pastors. This marked a significant transition, as Garden City Christian Church officially became a Hillsong Church campus on May 24th, 2009. This shift brought with it a wave of energy and a renewed focus on reaching out to the community. Today, the Hillsong Brisbane Campus stands as a beacon of faith, drawing people from all walks of life to experience the power of worship and community.
