Picture this Hillhead in 1869. It’s not yet part of Glasgow a bustling independent police burgh. Imagine Robert Bruce a local papermaker leading the charge. He and ten others petitioned the Sheriff of Lanarkshire. Their aim to give Hillhead more control. Their original plan included Kelvinside and Dowanhill but faced objections. The feuars of Dowanhill strongly opposed higher taxes. Hillhead finally became a burgh on June 15 1869. Its boundaries stretched from University Avenue to Ashton Lane then up Byres Road. It followed the River Kelvin to Kelvingrove Park.

Hillhead was more than just a collection of houses. It was a community forging its own identity. Robert Bruce became the first provost. The commissioners tackled immediate issues fixing cobbles and repairing pavements. They created committees for cleaning and even developed a sewerage system. Observers called Hillhead a model burgh. Efficient and organized it stood in contrast to accusations of incompetence leveled at other surrounding burghs.

The arrival of Glasgow University in 1870 was a turning point. Students and academics flocked to the area. The mix of middle-class residents plentiful green spaces and amenities shaped Hillhead’s character. Despite its success some Hillhead inhabitants wanted annexation to Glasgow. They felt a connection to the city despite seeking better residences in the suburbs.

In 1891 Hillhead was absorbed into Glasgow. Maryhill Crosshill and Pollokshields also joined. Glasgow’s territory doubled overnight. Although Hillhead existed as an independent burgh for only 22 years its distinct character remains. The elegant terraces the grand churches and the leafy lanes all whisper stories of its unique past. Walk along Byres Road and sense the legacy of this once independent community. The spirit of Hillhead lives on in the heart of Glasgow’s West End.
