What if I told you that the elegant Hiller-Brandtsche Häuser we see before us were once partially a barracks? Yes, you heard right. This grand edifice, with its ornate facade and air of stately elegance, housed soldiers right alongside the families of a merchant and a master tailor. Commissioned by King Frederick II himself in the 1760s, the Hiller-Brandtsche Häuser were part of his vision to transform the Breite Straße into a grand boulevard. He wanted Potsdam to rival the architectural splendor of other European cities. The king spared no expense, even funding the construction from his private coffers. The design, a closely guarded secret, was entrusted to architect Georg Christian Unger. He drew inspiration from an earlier, unbuilt design for Whitehall Palace in London by Inigo Jones, a prominent English architect who himself drew from the Italian Renaissance master, Andrea Palladio. The result is a fascinating blend of military practicality and palatial grandeur. Notice the three distinct sections of the building. The two three-story end wings, crowned by hipped roofs, were the private residences of merchant Johann Friedrich Hiller and master tailor Johann Gebhardt Brandt, the building’s namesakes. Sandwiched between them is the former barracks, a more modest two-story structure with a flat saddle roof. Unifying these distinct sections is Unger’s masterful use of ornate facades. This architectural marvel so impressed the king and the citizens of Potsdam that Unger went on to design over 300 more residential buildings and public structures in the city. The Hiller-Brandtsche Häuser stand as a testament to a king’s ambition and an architect’s skill, a fascinating blend of history and architectural brilliance right before your very eyes.
