Have you ever heard of the Gospel Wagon? In the late 19th century, a group of Christian folks in Philadelphia wanted to spread their message beyond the churches. It was a time of great change, and the city was filled with people seeking something new. They decided to take their faith directly to the streets. They bought a wagon, painted it bright, and started holding services all over the city. They sang hymns, preached sermons, and prayed with anyone who would listen. The Gospel Wagon became a familiar sight in Philadelphia, a symbol of hope and faith in a changing world. Many people were drawn to their message. One of the key leaders of this movement was a man named Frederick Reel. He led the group for 26 years, refusing any salary because he had another important job on the Reading Railroad. This group, who originally met in a small Gospel Chapel and moved to a schoolhouse renovated as a church meeting place, eventually formed the Highway Mission Tabernacle. This tabernacle, which became known for its vibrant outreach and influential pastors, has been a cornerstone of faith for over 130 years. They moved to a larger building, which was also a former Presbyterian church, and the congregation, filled with the Holy Spirit, thrived. Highway Mission Tabernacle has been a beacon of faith within Philadelphia, offering refuge and connection to the community for years. From humble beginnings to its current home on Spring Garden Street, Highway Mission Tabernacle has been a place of hope, love, and community.
