“Conservative Biblical faith.” That’s what defined Highland Park Church of God from its start. Highland Park Church was incorporated on January 4 1949. About 130 people formed the church. They had split from another church.
Initially the fellowship wanted to buy property near Highland Park. They intended to construct their building there. Zoning problems prevented this plan. Members still wanted to keep the name Highland Park Church. This was despite its location near Foster Park.
In 1949 the Highland Park Church bought the Conradt Mansion. This beautiful World War I vintage mansion was at 516 West Sycamore Street. They converted the first floor into a chapel. The basement had originally been a wine cellar. It became the fellowship hall. The third floor had been built as a ballroom. It and the second floor became the pastor’s family quarters.
In 1954 the main auditorium was constructed. It was added to the mansion. The building looked like one structure. In 1956 the church purchased a house for a parsonage. It was at 502 West Sycamore Street.
Highland Park Church reached its peak in the early 1960s. It averaged nearly 200 people at the morning service. Foreign missions were emphasized. A decline started in 1963. It lasted over twenty years. By late 1983 attendance was averaging in the 70s. That’s when Pastor Ed Vasicek began his work.
God has remained faithful to Highland Park Church of God. The church grew in time. It maintained its love of deep Bible study. It kept its focus on foreign missions. It also continued to encourage fellowship.
Highland Park Church’s mission is clear. It wants “to reach people with the Gospel”. It also wants “to connect believers to one another and to God”. It aims “to deepen believers”. This provides direction. The members are excited to see what God will do. He will further His Gospel. He will use His people. He will glorify Himself here at Highland Park Church.
Today Highland Park Church of God stands as a testament. It shows commitment and faith. It embodies a rich history. It continues to serve its community. It offers a place for worship, growth, and fellowship. The church welcomes all. It invites you to become part of its ongoing story. A story rooted in faith. A story driven by mission. A story dedicated to glorifying God.
