“Fancy a bit of art?” I ask. The Higher Art Gallery is not just a space. It’s a portal into Brisbane’s vibrant cultural soul.
The Queensland Art Gallery, or QAG, has a rich history. It all began back in 1895 as the Queensland National Art Gallery. Can you believe it? The gallery bounced around different spots. It shared space with the Queensland Museum in the 1960s.
Fast forward to 1982. The Queensland Art Gallery finally found a permanent home. It opened on Brisbane’s South Bank. Robin Gibson designed the Queensland Cultural Centre. It was a monumental moment for the city.
Then, in 2006, the Gallery of Modern Art, or GOMA, opened. Now, QAG and GOMA work together as one big art family. They are known as QAGOMA. It is one of Australia’s most exciting creative precincts.
QAGOMA is easy to reach by bus or train. There are also cafes nearby for lunch breaks. Look out for water dragon lizards by the river. They are pretty friendly.
Inside the Higher Art Gallery, expect a feast for the eyes. You will find everything from old masters to avant-garde pieces. There are landscapes, portraits and pioneering digital artworks.
QAGOMA boasts an impressive permanent collection. It hosts regular temporary exhibitions, too. Since 1993, QAGOMA has hosted the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art. It draws millions of visitors.
The Queensland Art Gallery building itself is special. It was designed to create a flow for visitors. The Watermall separates the tranquil galleries from the busy areas. Light colors adapt to Brisbane’s subtropical climate.
The Higher Art Gallery’s collection includes famous works. “La Belle Hollandaise” by Pablo Picasso is a highlight. So is “Under the Jacaranda” by Richard Godfrey Rivers.
The gallery actively supports Indigenous Australian art. It builds strong relationships with Queensland’s Indigenous communities.
QAGOMA offers innovative learning programs for children. The Children’s Art Centre coordinates these programs. Developing young art enthusiasts is a priority.
To ensure all Queenslanders see the art, exhibitions tour regional areas.
So, as you stand here at the Higher Art Gallery, remember its journey. From a small beginning in 1895 to a world-class institution. QAGOMA continues to inspire and enrich Brisbane’s cultural landscape.
