The High Impact Research Building fosters research excellence. It supports projects aiming for top-tier publications. These publications appear in ISI/Web of Science journals. The focus is on fundamental research. This leads to new knowledge creation. It is less about immediate product development. The building also aims to boost research capabilities. It builds expertise within the university. This often involves collaborations. They collaborate with prestigious overseas universities.
These High Impact Research grants were unique. They differed from existing grants. The Chancellery managed them. The Vice-Chancellor chaired the High Impact Research Committee. This committee evaluated projects. It decided on funding suitability. The committee also monitored progress.
Recognizing the University of Malaya’s importance, the government acted. It provided extra research funding. The goal was to break into the world’s top 100 universities by 2015. In August 2011, the Ministry of Education invested RM590 million. This went into the UM-MoE HIR program.
The Ministry of Education’s funding allowed ambitious research. Researchers could undertake projects over longer periods. The original Chancellory HIR program was funded modestly. It used internal funds. It became less appealing to experienced researchers. However, it still served a purpose. It supported focused projects. These projects needed completion within two years.
In 2012, the Central HIR Committee made a decision. Dato VC chaired this committee. They decided to discontinue the UM HIR Chancellory project. All future HIR funding would go to HIR Phase 2.
The University of Malaya Halal Research Centre is here. It is located on the ground floor. It changed its name from the International Halal Research University of Malaya. The Vice Chancellor advised this change. This center advances halal research. It contributes to Malaysia’s role in the global halal industry.
INFRA, the university’s infrastructure division, has a presence here. They offer instrumentation and services. These support research across various fields. These fields includes analysis, microbiology and lab animal research. They hold events like the Advanced Training on GCMS Application. Another event is the Short Course: TRIPLE QUAD LC-MS/MS.
