“Imagine President Washington slept here.” The Heyward-Washington House stands before us a testament to Charleston’s rich history. It is more than just a building. It is a portal to the past.

Built in 1772 the Heyward-Washington House was the town home of Thomas Heyward Jr. He was one of South Carolina’s signers of the Declaration of Independence. This Georgian-style double house exudes elegance and historical significance.

Thomas Heyward Jr. was not only a signer. He was also a patriot leader. He served as an artillery officer during the American Revolution. Captured by the British in 1780 Heyward was exiled to St. Augustine Florida. He was later exchanged in 1781.

But the story of the Heyward-Washington House doesn’t end there. In May 1791 the City of Charleston rented this very house for President George Washington. He stayed here for a week. Since then it has been traditionally known as the Heyward-Washington House.

Step inside and you will be transported to the late 18th century. The house features a superb collection of Charleston-made furniture. The Holmes Bookcase is one of the finest examples of American colonial furniture.

Don’t miss the only 1740s kitchen building open to the public in Charleston. Explore the formal gardens. They showcase plants commonly used in the South Carolina Lowcountry during the late 18th century.

The Heyward-Washington House has changed hands over the years. Heyward sold the house in 1794 to John F. Grimke. He was also a Revolutionary War officer. Grimke was the father of Sarah and Angeline Grimke. They were famous abolitionists and suffragettes.

In 1929 The Charleston Museum acquired the property. The following year it opened as Charleston’s first historic house museum. In 1978 it was recognized as a National Historic Landmark.

Take a moment to appreciate the Heyward-Washington House. Feel the echoes of the past. Picture George Washington walking through these rooms. Imagine Thomas Heyward Jr. discussing the future of a new nation. This house is a treasure. It connects us to the people and events that shaped America.
