Nestled within a dense German forest, the Hexenhaus whispers tales of architectural ingenuity. The Hexenhaus, or “Witch’s House,” isn’t a place of spells and potions. It’s a testament to the vision of architects Alison and Peter Smithson. The Hexenhaus began its transformation in 1986. Furniture maker Axel Bruchhäuser, the owner, commissioned the Smithsons to create a series of lookouts on the property. Over the years, the project evolved. The Smithsons continued to modify the house, blending it seamlessly with its natural surroundings. By 2003, the Hexenhaus had undergone 23 modifications. These weren’t just cosmetic changes. The Smithsons reshaped the very structure of the house. Floors were painted by artist Stefan Wewerka, adding another layer of artistry to the home. Walls were removed, ceilings opened up, and even trees were incorporated into the design. Light poured in, blurring the lines between inside and out. The forest became part of the house, and the house became part of the forest. Wood, stone, and glass became the primary materials. A new façade was added. A veranda extended the living space towards the southeast. From the owner’s bedroom, a wooden walkway led to a small observation deck. It offered a panoramic view of the surrounding forest. The Hexenhaus became a prime example of the Smithsons’ radical architectural style, a harmonious blend of nature and design. The Hexenhaus stands as a hidden gem, a testament to the power of architectural vision.
