Could this column before you speak of Mainz instead of Nuremberg? This is the Heunensaule. It is one of several historic sandstone columns. These columns were originally crafted for the reconstruction of the Willigis Cathedral in Mainz. The cathedral burned down in 1009.

These columns were likely completed in the 11th century. They were created in a quarry near Miltenberg. The columns were created before the cathedral project was formally planned. This move showed early business foresight. However, the columns were never used. Alternative supports were chosen for the cathedral’s reconstruction.

Over time, the number of Heunen Columns dwindled. By the 18th century, only 14 remained. By the 1960s, just eight were still standing. Today, the surviving columns are dispersed across several locations. The most famous one stands as a monument in Mainz. Others can be found in Nuremberg, Munich, and on the waterfront in Miltenberg.

In 1975, the city of Miltenberg gifted one of these impressive columns to Mainz. This gift commemorated the 1000th anniversary of the Mainz Cathedral’s construction. This Heunensaule column weighs 16 tons. It measures 6.4 meters in height with a diameter of 1.2 meters. It now serves as a symbol of the city.

It is prominently placed in the middle of the market square. It sits on a bronze base. Palatinate sculptor Gernot Rumpf created this base. Rumpf’s design tells the story of Mainz through symbolic headgear. It incorporates elements such as a Roman gladiator mask. The mask includes a fox. This fox represents former Mayor Jockel Fuchs. Playful details include three mice symbolizing political factions. A rattling Jacobin hat makes this sculpture both a historic artifact. It is also a playful homage to Mainz’s civic identity.

So while this Heunensaule is in Nuremberg. Remember its story is deeply rooted in Mainz. It serves as a silent ambassador. It connects two cities through time and stone.
