Over 60000 patients. That’s how many Friedrich Ritter von Hessing treated at the Hessingsche Orthopädische Heilanstalt in Augsburg. Can you believe it? This impressive complex stands before us a testament to his pioneering spirit.

The Hessingsche Orthopädische Heilanstalt wasn’t just a hospital. It was a self-sufficient village. Founded in 1868 by Friedrich Ritter von Hessing a visionary in orthopaedic technology it quickly grew into one of Europe’s largest spa and treatment centers. He wasn’t just a doctor. He was an innovator. He understood the importance of holistic care.

Hessing’s genius lay not only in his medical treatments but also in his creation of a healing environment. The buildings designed by Jean Keller in a romantic-neo-baroque style are a sight to behold. Two wings still stand today. He even commissioned a statue of himself a symbol of his dedication. This statue stands proudly in front of the main entrance.

The Hessingsche Orthopädische Heilanstalt offered more than just medical care. It provided cultural enrichment. In 1886 Hessing again commissioned Keller to build the Kurhaustheater. This was a marvel of engineering. It’s the only remaining multi-functional theatre in cast-iron and glass construction from the Gründerzeit. The building was originally meant to keep his patients entertained. Sadly it was destroyed by arson in 1972 but later faithfully rebuilt.

Hessing’s commitment to his patients extended to every detail. He even built a church St. Johannes on the grounds. The church stands as a testament to his dedication and foresight. It has a neo-baroque facade and a neo-gothic interior. It’s a true hidden gem.

A guest house built in 1896 completed this remarkable complex. It provided accommodation for visitors and patients. Imagine the bustling atmosphere. People from all over Europe came here seeking healing. Bertha Kipfmüller a patient around 1910 described her stay as wonderful. She recalled the beautiful rooms the shared dining table with exquisite flowers from the hospital’s greenhouse. She even mentioned a Russian dignitary staying there.

The Hessingsche Orthopädische Heilanstalt is more than just a hospital. It’s a historical landmark. It’s a story of innovation and compassion. It’s a place where history and healing intertwine. It’s a legacy of Friedrich Ritter von Hessing. A man who dedicated his life to improving the lives of others. A truly remarkable man. The Hessing legacy continues through the Hessing Stiftung which still operates the facility. The Hessing Kliniken are now a leading orthopedics center in Europe. They remain a testament to Hessing’s vision. His dedication endures.
