Hidden in plain sight Herseaux a section of Mouscron in Belgium boasts a rich history. Its name Herseaux in French Herzeeuw in Dutch hints at a past intertwined with military might. The etymology suggests a dwelling place of an army a testament to its strategic importance.

Herseaux wasn’t always part of Mouscron. Before the 1977 municipal mergers it existed as an independent commune. Its history stretches back to the 11th century a time of fortified settlements and shifting power. It even had its own mayor Jean Beaucarne served for several terms.

During World War I a German airfield occupied Herseaux’s land. Its residents endured hardships similar to those in nearby Lille. This period left an enduring mark on the village’s identity. After the war Herseaux became part of the Hainaut province and Wallonia.

The village itself is divided into three distinct areas: Herseaux Place the heart of the town Herseaux Ballons and Herseaux Gare. Each area carries its own character reflecting the village’s evolution. The population has changed considerably too. In 1765 it was 1319. By 1801 this grew to 1478 and by 1846 it reached 2106.

Herseaux’s religious history is equally complex. Originally under the diocese of Tournai its allegiance shifted. First to the diocese of Ghent then back to Bruges finally ending up in the diocese of Tournai. Its parish church dedicated to Saint Maur reflects this evolving religious landscape. The church was rebuilt several times. The current structure dates from 1870. During World War II its bells were confiscated by the Germans. New bells replaced them in 1947. These bells chime today a tribute to Herseaux’s resilience.

More than a quiet village Herseaux has produced notable figures. Alfred Delourme a prominent Walloon activist was born here. So was Marcel Marlier the creator of the beloved Martine children’s book series. These individuals represent the village’s enduring spirit. Herseaux’s coat of arms even tells a story of its heritage. Its complex design reflects the village’s multi-layered history.

So as you leave Herseaux remember its resilient spirit. Remember the strategic importance of this place. Remember the echoes of its many churches. Remember its fascinating story. Remember Herseaux.
