What began as Brauerei Wölfler & Wedekind Herrenhausen in 1868, evolved into what we know today as Herrenhäuser Brewery. This brewery stands as a testament to Hannover’s brewing heritage. The Herrenhäuser Brewery has been crafting beers for over 150 years. Today, it continues to blend tradition with modern brewing techniques.

Herrenhäuser Brewery adopted its current name after initially operating under Brauerei Wölfler & Wedekind Herrenhausen. The brewery became Aktiengesellschaft Vereinsbrauerei Herrenhausen in 1880. Just four years later, Herrenhäuser began brewing Pilsener-style beer. In 1889, the company’s shares were traded on the Hanover stock exchange.

Did you know that Herrenhäuser Brewery once fought for its name? In 1913, the brewery won a legal battle against the city of Pilsen. Pilsen tried to stop Herrenhäuser from using the name “Herrenhäuser Pilsener.” This victory underscores the brewery’s commitment to its unique identity.

Herrenhäuser Brewery has seen many changes. In 1961, it started exporting bottled and canned beer overseas. By 1963/64, beer output exceeded 300,000 hectoliters. The brewery then became a GmbH. Herrenhäuser Brewery celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1968. That same year, it introduced plastic beer crates and discontinued swing-top bottles.

Facing economic challenges, the Herrenhäuser Brewery underwent restructuring. In 2010, insolvency proceedings were opened. However, the Schulz-Hausbrandt family, owners of Privatbrauerei Wittingen GmbH, purchased the company. The brewery was then renamed Privatbrauerei Herrenhausen.

Herrenhäuser Brewery offers a range of beers. These include Premium Pilsener, Alster, Icebeer, and Herrenhäuser Weizen. They also produce seasonal beers like Hannoversches Festbier for Oktoberfest. In 2021, they introduced Hannover Helles. These beers reflect the brewery’s dedication to quality and innovation.

The brewery produces roughly 137,500 hectoliters of beer annually.

Beyond brewing, Herrenhäuser Brewery actively supports local sports and events. It sponsors the EC Hannover Indians. It also supports SV Odin Hannover, SV 1908 Ricklingen and Bissendorfer Panther. The brewery is present at major events like the Schützenfest Hannover and the Maschseefest.

A visit to Herrenhäuser Brewery offers an immersive experience. Brewery tours allow visitors to witness the beer-making process. You can see how malt, hops, and water transform into “Herri”. The tour concludes with a tasting session. Here, you can savor the quality and craftsmanship of Herrenhäuser beers. The brewery also has a factory outlet. Here, you can purchase fresh beer and branded merchandise.

The Herrenhäuser Brewery is more than just a brewery. It is a symbol of Hannover’s brewing tradition, a place where quality meets heritage. As you stand here, consider the generations of brewers who have poured their passion into every drop of Herrenhäuser beer. Cheers to the Herrenhäuser Brewery, a true taste of Hannover.
