Was this once a knight’s estate? Right before you stands the Herrenhaus Klingewalde a magnificent manor house in the Klingewalde district of Gorlitz. Its history stretches back to 1581 when it was first mentioned as an outlying farm. Before 1649 it was elevated to the status of a knight’s estate a true testament to its importance.

The Herrenhaus Klingewalde as it stands today isn’t just a relic of the past. It saw significant changes over the centuries. Built in the 16th century its architecture was later embellished in the Baroque style during the 18th century. A major renovation in 1854 gave it the appearance we see today. Imagine the craftsmen painstakingly adding those crenellations or battlements atop the walls. Picture the intricate work involved in creating the facade with its nine-axis layout and central risalit crowned by a stepped gable.

After the Second World War displaced people from the German eastern territories found refuge within its walls. Then from 1953 to 1985 it served as a nursing home. A period of disrepair followed before extensive renovations between 1992 and 1999 restored its former glory.

Today the Herrenhaus Klingewalde is a vibrant hub of activity. It is used by the Zittau/Gorlitz University of Applied Sciences. It also houses the International Summer School of the Arts. A unique feature is the trinational Collegium PONTES. This brings together scholars from Gorlitz Zgorzelec and Zhorelec.

Look closely at the building. Note the two-story structure. It is graced with a beautiful hipped roof. Its courtyard facade features the prominent central risalit. Observe the elegant round-arch frieze and the corner turrets above it. The arched windows on the upper floor add to the architectural charm. The park side offers a grand double staircase leading to a terrace. Here you will find round-arch windows. A square three-story tower with crenellations and a tent roof stands proudly to the left. These details showcase the late Baroque style skillfully blended with elements from later renovations.

The Herrenhaus Klingewalde is more than just stones and mortar. It is a living testament to history. A symbol of resilience adaptation and cultural exchange. Its story is one of transformations and enduring legacy. It is a place where the past meets the present and continues to shape the future.
