Herolds Eg is named after Vilhelm Herold. He was a world-renowned Danish opera singer. Herold was born in Hasle in 1865. He became famous for his beautiful tenor voice.
Imagine Herold returning to Bornholm later in life. He sought solace near this very tree. He would sit here and reflect on his life. He remembered his childhood games and his manhood songs.
A plaque was once affixed to Herolds Eg. It captured these sentiments. The inscription read: “Her sad jeg ved den gamle eg i sommerdage lange og mindedes min barndomsleg og mine manddoms-sange. Nu stunder det mod høstens tid min sang er stilnet, lokken hvid. Syng for mig, eg, din sang saa blid i vinterens nat – den lange.”
This translates to: “Here I sat by the old oak in long summer days and remembered my childhood games and my manhood songs. Now the time is approaching for autumn my song has stilled, my lock white. Sing for me, oak, your song so gentle in winter’s night – the long one.”
Sadly, the plaque is no longer here. It was removed by someone. They collect irreplaceable cultural artifacts. But its memory lives on through stories.
Herolds Eg is also known as Nøgleegen. This means Key Oak. Local legend says it holds the keys to the farm’s fortune. Herolds Eg stands proudly on Heroldsvej near Kofoedgård.
Vilhelm Herold’s impact extended beyond music. He directed the National Theatre. He was also a talented sculptor. His portrait bust was acquired by the National Museum of Art in 1906.
Herold passed away in 1937. He is buried in Hasle Cemetery. His legacy lives on through this tree.
