Overlooking a deep gorge carved by the River Delvin sits Hermit’s Cave. Hermit’s Cave is nestled beneath the ruins of Naul’s 15th-century Black Castle. The village of Naul, known as An Aill in Irish, meaning “the cliff,” got its name from the dramatic landscape surrounding Hermit’s Cave. J.C. Coleman documented this small cave, a mere three meters long, hidden beneath a cloak of ivy. It’s a surprisingly wild and green canyon, a secret world tucked away below the flat lands above. The origin of the name Hermit’s Cave remains a mystery, adding to the intrigue of this hidden gem.
