In Greek mythology, Pan, who is said to have come from the union of Hermes and a nymph, is the god of shepherds, herds and fertility. Right in front of you stands the Hermes och Pan Statue. This bronze statue, created by Axel Wallenberg, has graced Munkplan since the 1950s. The statue depicts Hermes, messenger of the gods, bestowing the gift of music upon Pan, the god of the wild, symbolized by the panpipes. The Hermes och Pan Statue isn’t just a beautiful artwork. It represents the interplay between the human and natural worlds. This theme is particularly relevant in Jönköping, a city nestled amidst stunning lakes and forests.
